I WILL RATHER SLEEP AND KNOW I DIDNT EAT FOR ONE WEEK THAN TO BE PAID 1000 OR 2000 CEDIS FOR A SHOW – LAWYER NTI

             

Ghanaian comedian Richmond Amoako popularly known as Lawyer Nti had said he will refuse to take 1000 or 2000 Ghana cedis for a show. 


In an interview with Obidumbie Adu Kumi on Asempa showbiz review on Asempa 94.7fm, he made known that he has never regretted taking up a show when he was asked by the host if he has had any. 

According to Lawyer Nti, many people do not take their industry serious and that is affecting their value as comedians.

He made known that comedy should be treated just like any other business. He added that there was no way he was going to accept charges like 1000 or 2000 Ghana cedis for a show if his expenses like clothing, transport and others coming for the show exceeds the payment. 

Lawyer Nti insisted comedians should stand up for themselves because there is no one going to do that for them. In saying that, he appreciated Clemento Suarez, another popular comedian in Ghana for helping and beginning such campaign of standing up for themselves. 

“Which of your shows have you regret taking on or accepted?” the host, Obidumbie Adu Kumi asked.

“Errm... I am not sure I have gotten anything like that because, I am one of those people who will not accept anything that will make me suffer. I would rather sleep than come to your show and take maybe 1000 or 2000 Ghana cedis considering my transport and costumes cost more than that. I will not do it. I will rather sleep and know I didn’t eat for one week”, Lawyer Nti stated.

According to the Kejetia and Makola Lawyer, It’s better to sleep than to take such an amount for a show if the cost of his costumes and transport should cost more than the amount he is being paid. 

“Have you ever gotten a problem with someone just like how you are saying, Maybe that’s what the person can offer but weighing yourself and the cost involve you said you won’t agree to the price. Don’t you think the person will feel you are being pompous?” the host asked.

In answering that, Lawyer Nti stated emphatically that, he really does not care about the persons reaction because at that moment the thoughts is in the persons head after they are done talking on the phone. He added that, if he does not put worth on himself there was no one going to do that for him. And people shouldn’t think because he is a comedian, they can just call him to come do anything for them, he is not going to do that.

“Then it will be in the mind of the person because at that time, we had ended the call. If I am feeling pompous or not, I am not going to do it. If I don’t put worth on myself, who is going to do that for me? So if you call me to carry pots on my head then I will come because its comedy? oh no... There are certain things I will just tell you I will not do it. And I think Clemento Suarez is someone who has helped us a lot as comedians because it got to a point he started this agenda, “standing up for ourselves” and he did it. There are times he will say it at shows and we realized what he was doing was right so we supported it. Now when we get the opportunity we also let our case known to the people. We should be treated as businessmen just like there are other businesses out there and by saying that, there has to be a change of mindset.” He noted.
